Sleep Dentistry

The Dental Role in Sleep Medicine?
Dentistry can now play a significant role in sleep medicine. When the dentist learns the basic principles of sleep medicine he/she will have the tools to become a valuable part of the sleep medicine team. CPAP is the “gold standard” treatment of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). In certain cases, a viable alternative, which may be preferable to the patient, is the oral sleep appliance.

While it is essential that the dentist be well versed in sleep medicine to increase his/her input into the treatment decision making, it is as essential that the dentist is well able to diagnose the joint and muscular status of the patient prior to treatment. Understanding Joint Vibration Analysis as well as Electognathography can be an invaluable tool in diagnosis and can therefore have a major effect on treatment decision making and treatment positioning.

The courses listed on our site will prepare you fully to become a key member of your sleep team. You will learn sleep medicine, and how to prevent and/or treat joint and muscle side effects of treatment while your patient continues to receive the benefits of oral appliance therapy. Because obstructive sleep disorders are often associated with heart disease and stroke, their treatment can be life saving.
